Курс посвящен развитию исторической живописи на протяжении нескольких столетий. Мы начнем с художественной теории XV века, в которой «история» применительно к живописи означала «нарратив», построенный по преимуществу на основе религиозной и мифологической тематики. Затем мы проследим традицию исторической живописи сквозь эпохи и остановимся на наиболее интересных примерах. Особое внимание в курсе будет уделено XIX веку, когда художники оказались захвачены «историей» в нашем современном понимании, т.е. реальным прошлым со всем его эпохальным и национальным разнообразием. Мы увидим, как художники переизобретали историческую картину, вдохновляясь исследованиями историков, историческими романами, историческими документами, коллекциями исторических артефактов. Мы рассмотрим среди прочих произведения Караваджо, Пуссена, Рубенса, Рембрандта, Веласкеса, Давида, Гойи, Делакруа, Менцеля, Дега, Мане.
