Psychoanalysis started as an applied “talking cure” in early 20th century but swiftly developed into a philosophical psychology that became a foundation for much of the contemporary social theory. THe course will focus on Freud, Lacan, and Freudo-Marxism, with elucidation of the key concepts such as “unconscious”, “drive”, “ambivalence” “Oedipal complex”, and the like. A particular attention will be given to the Soviet criticism and revision of psychoanalysis (Voloshinov, Vygotsky, and Mamardashvili).
