The course is devoted both to the theory and practice of expressing one’s own position and identity. Our aim is to introduce students to historical aspects and philosophical foundations of freedom of speech, as well as to reflect on the boundaries between personal freedom of expression and the rights of others. The history of the concepts of freedom and freedom of expression is a separate topic to be discussed in class.
Ethical reporting is another important issue, since there are things that, as they say, ‘are better left unsaid and unseen.” Finally, to what extent is freedom of speech important for democratic institutions and civil society?
In class, we will discuss a wide range of issues, including (but not limited to) hate speech in the digitized world, censorship and self-censorship, cancel culture, and academic freedom. This course is part of an OSUN Network Collaborative Course.
