Oleksandr Vasiukov

Ph.D. in Political Science

Oleksandr Vasiukov is a Ukrainian anthropologist, ethnologist, sociolinguist and political scientist. Oleksandr received MA (Odessa National University) and PhD (Higher School of Economics) degrees in Political science. In 2018-2023 Oleksandr graduated from MA and PhD programs on cultural anthropology at European University at Saint Petersburg. His main field of scientific interests includes anthropology of ethnicity, theories of nationalism, ethnic and language policy, ethnic and linguistic minorities, phenomenon of language shift, language maintenance and standardization, Slavic languages and cultures.
Since 2018, Oleksandr studies language situation and problem of language shift among ethnic minorities of Central Europe. Recent years he carried out six ethnographic and sociolinguistic expeditions and spent almost one year of intensive fieldwork among Kashubians in Poland’s Pomerania, Silesians in Poland’s and Czech Upper Silesia, and Rusyns in Eastern Slovakia and Transcarpathian Ukraine. Since 2022, Oleksandr lives in Ukraine and studies phenomenon of multilingualism in Ukrainian South. He regularly presents his results at scientific conferences, has published 17 scientific articles in Ukrainian, Russian, English, and continues his professional training in field of methods and methodology.
His research is of interest to scientific community of Poland, Germany and Ukraine, and resulted several scientific and cultural projects in Poland (Gdańsk University, Kashubian Institute, Kashubian-Pomeranian Association). His sociolinguistic work was financially supported by German institutions (DAAD, Bielefeld and Oldenburg University, Center for Siberian Cultures).
Today Oleksandr is working on project dedicated to the minority languages in Poland’s educational system (Mercator Center, Frisian Academy, The Netherlands) and studies Chinese at Confucius Institute (level 5).
