Jan Levchenko

Jan Levchenko is a guest professor of film and visual studies at FLAS, Montenegro (2025-…) and Ark Without Borders (Kovcheg bez granits) online educational project (2024-…). He is also a former professor of Higher School of Economics, Moscow (2009-2021) and visiting professor of Baltic Federal University, Kaliningrad (2017-2021). He’s an editor-in-chief of Cine-Texts (Kinoteksty) book series in New Literary Observer Publishing House (2021-…). During 2017-2020 he was an editor-in-chief of video courses in the Open University online project (supported by the Open Russia Foundation, London).
His research focuses on film studies, especially on film culture (a field where the film analysis meets with cultural history of (post)national societies in the XX-XXI c.), a visual culture in its broader sense, urbanism and cultural geography in films in particular. His parallel research tracks also include intellectual history (e. g. Russian Formalism) and the study of post- and decolonial dimensions of Post-Soviet societies in Russia, Baltics and beyond.
His texts has been published in a wide range of journals, including New Literary Observer, Slavic Literatures (former Russian Literature), Logos, Die Welt der Slaven, etc. He’s an author and (co)editor of the following books: The Other Science. Russian Formalists in Search of Biography (2012, In Russian), An Epoch of Defamiliarization: Russian Formalist and the Humanities (2016, In Russian), A Man with the Brilliant Arm. Towards the centenary of Leonid Gaidai (2023). He’s also an active critic, columnist and journalist in the various media such as Radio Liberty, Novaya Gazeta, Postimees (Estonia), etc.
